Rewards of Clinic Supervision

“I have been working with a student who came in quite shy and unsure. So, it took a little bit longer working with her. She observed me more than the average student did before getting into doing her own work. She just wasn’t comfortable. Hearings were coming up and she didn’t feel confident in doing them. And then you can just see how it slowly, slowly builds and then she started doing parts of the hearing herself, then she started doing the whole hearing herself… She got to the morning of [a particular] hearing and there was a technology issue, and she couldn’t get into her files… She was able to do the hearing without her notes because she had prepared so well…  And it just was such a huge leap in her confidence, to feel like from the beginning she wasn’t able to do it at all, to be four months in, she could do it without her notes. So, that was very rewarding.” (6)
