This book identifies the main kinds of critical issues that arise in the supervision of the health and social professions and provides suggestions on how they can be best resolved through a normative supervision lens. Normative supervision focuses on enhancing quality control through a formal, constructive, work-focused, and interpersonal process which addresses the supervisee’s critical issues and encourages positive learning opportunities.
The most common issues in supervision in these contexts include competence concerns, relationship struggles, communication problems, and work-related stressors. This book provides a framework for understanding these issues and suggests resolution options. Critical issues in supervision can be resolved when there is a positive outcome or satisfactory closure of an issue, which is attributable to the relational process between supervisor and supervisee. When these issues are unresolved, they engender further vicarious coping cycles, leading to greater personal and organizational concerns.
