This article outlines the impact of a training program on competency-based supervision for mental health professionals. Some US states require training in supervision, which is often self-led and, according to the authors, relatively ineffective. This program is one of several that are attempting to improve supervision through comprehensive training programs. This particular program found positive results in training for multicultural competence and “contracting” (the process of setting the contractual terms of supervision). Problems with the program include a lack of appropriate technology, lack of experience in direct supervision, challenges with organizational policies, and problems with dual roles (e.g. as, supervisor and clinician).
