Law School v. “Real Life”

“[Students are] fixated on what they learned in law school; that you have to be objective, that you have to look for the specific legal issue that’s come up. And our approach in the clinic is very different from law school. We have social workers who also work within our clinic, so we have a broader approach when it comes to how we’re going to deal with clients. A very trauma informed approach, one that takes into account a holistic approach to their case, not just their specific immigration related legal issue. And so, trying to break through what the law school is trying to create as a lawyer and making them more of a holistic practitioner, is what we’re trying to do. So, sometimes that dichotomy can be very difficult for them to get over.” (11)
